How We Help

About Dr. Tracee Metcalfe

I am an internal medicine physician with over two decades of experience in clinical practice, research, and patient-centered care. After earning my Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Colorado and completing my residency at the University of Washington, I moved to Vail, Colorado, where I have dedicated my career to improving the health and lives of patients in a variety of settings, including hospital medicine, primary care, hospice care, and high-altitude medicine.

I was a founding member of the hospitalist program at Vail Health and spent 15 years serving patients in this dynamic, fast-paced environment. While I found deep fulfillment in guiding patients through acute illnesses, my experience also highlighted the limitations of traditional medical models that prioritize disease management over proactive wellness. Over time, I became increasingly aware that focusing solely on treating illness often overlooks the importance of preventive care and overall well-being. My goal with creating Mountain MD is to empower patients to maintain their health, prevent chronic diseases, and avoid hospitalizations by emphasizing preventive strategies and holistic care.

Throughout my career, I have been honored to receive recognition for clinical excellence, including being named Physician of the Year at VVMC twice. My adventurous spirit has also led me to become the first U.S. woman to summit all 14 of the world’s highest peaks-a journey that has tested my resilience and deepened my understanding of human physiology under extreme conditions. My experience as an expedition doctor on high-altitude climbs continues to inform my practice and enrich my perspective on health,

In addition to my clinical work, I am a published author in the fields of high-altitude medicine, palliative care, and oncology, with articles featured in respected journals such as High Altitude Medicine and Biology and the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management.
Outside of work, I enjoy ski mountaineering, climbing, biking, and spending time with friends. My personal philosophy blends the pursuit of excellence with a deep commitment to helping others thrive-whether on the slopes, in the clinic, or in everyday life.
